Alison Brown

Founder, Knitter & Spinner

Whether on oil rigs in the Artic Circle, traversing mountains in the Lake District or tackling climbs in Belgium, for over 30 years Alison has always had her knitting with her.

10 years ago, she traded crochet lessons with spinning lessons on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, and from then on she has been in love with using traditional and sustainable methods to create beautiful woolen clothing.

Now the primary creator of Chasing The Dawn hats, she washes the raw wool fleeces in a tin bath not dissimilar to the traditional ones used 100 years ago. The wool is then carded, and spun, before being knit into our Mistral range. Each fairisle design (The Tempest range) comes straight from Alison’s life experiences, and great loves in the world.

Alison Johnson

Brand & Marketing

When I was six I painted a portrait of a Brownie in full outfit complete with badge and beret. It was sent away to be judged as part of a countrywide art competition and was exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in London. The joy and the success of that picture defined my creative path ultimately propelling me to art school in London to study graphic design and onto a successful career as an illustrator, designer and typographer.

My love of design eventually took me into academia where I taught many university students, encouraging and inspiring them to be the best they could be. Eventually I became a member of the school executive in a university, where it was my privilege to influence the learning experience of students at a local, national and international level.

I have now come full circle, back to my creative roots and practice and am thrilled to be part of this new exciting venture with chasing the dawn.
